Empowering Black British Women Cinematographers: NFTS and Netflix Renew Scholarship in Celebration of International Women’s Day

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and Netflix are thrilled to announce the renewal of the Black British Woman Cinematographer Scholarship for a third consecutive year. This continuation underscores
a joint and unwavering commitment to empowering and supporting emerging black women filmmakers working behind the camera in the field of Cinematography.

Initially launched with remarkable success in 2022, the Black British Woman Cinematographer scholarship symbolises the collaborative effort between NFTS and Netflix to address the
under-representation of black women behind the camera. By offering specialised training,
the scholarship aims to open more pathways for black British women to pursue careers in cinematography, contributing to a richer diversity of perspectives and storytelling
in film and television.

The National Film and Television School (NFTS) and Netflix are thrilled to announce the renewal of the Black British Woman Cinematographer Scholarship for a third consecutive year.

Netflix will continue to fully fund a Cinematography scholar beginning their studies in January 2025 throughout their two years at the NFTS, in addition to providing substantial generous financial support to cover the recipients’ living expenses. A network of opportunities is available for scholars after graduating, including access to internships and Netflix production work.

Three scholarship recipients have greatly benefited from the NFTS’ world-class training and state-of-the-art facilities to date including Lami Okrekson, Ndrika Anyika and the NFTS’ most recent scholar Adenike Oke who has started her journey, having joined in January 2024. The financial support from the scholarship has allowed Lami and Ndrika the freedom to pursue their filmmaking career. The continuation of the scholarship will ensure these opportunities are open for the next generation of scholars.

The National Film and Television School’s 2-year Cinematography MA gives students first-hand training by industry professionals on all the essential elements of visual storytelling. It’s the only specialist Cinematography course of its kind in the UK equipping the filmmakers of tomorrow with the art of shooting different film genres with a selection of cameras, lighting, and composition.

As applications are currently open for the January 2025 intake of Cinematography students, the Black British Woman Cinematographer scholarship is continuing to play a pivotal role in building a more inclusive industry and shaping the future of cinema.

To apply for the Black British Woman Cinematographer Scholarship Award applicants must be UK citizens. If offered a place and eligible, applicants will be invited to apply for the scholarship.
