Full speaker Bios and session descriptions:

John Lee is is Head of Department of the Model Making one-year Diploma course at The National Film and Television School, which is now in its fifth successful year, with many graduates now employed in the UK Film and TV Industry, on projects such as: Chicken Run:2, Pinocchio, Dune:2, Masters of the Air, Wonka, Barbie, Spitting Image, and The House, and many TV commercials and promos.

During an extensive career, John has worked in Commercials, Animation, Children’s TV, Promo’s, and Feature Film, as both Modeller, Art Director and Designer. His speciality is model making and prop making, which has enabled him to work on some of the most prestigious and well known films over recent years – Harry Potter, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, V for Vendetta, Moon, Casino Royale, The Martian, and three of the latest films in the Star Wars franchise.

“Alongside working on the feature films, I have also enjoyed teaching and mentoring students, at various Universities and Art Colleges, which has led me to creating the unique One year Model Making course at the NFTS.

Model making and Animation is an exciting and tactile medium to work in. The attention to detail is exquisite, and as a discipline, gives the modeller and film maker complete control of every frame of this unique craft.” John’s also worked in the Art Department on three model animated feature films - “Fantastic Mr Fox”, “Frankenweenie”, and “Isle of Dogs”. He was also Production Designer and supervising model maker with his team of 15 artists, on the multi award winning John Lewis Christmas advert “The Bear & the Hare.”

In John’s session, he will present an exciting illustrated slideshow, showcasing some of the fantastic models, props, and puppets created over recent years by past and present students.

John will give an overview of the course, detailing course content and explaining how he prepares his students for industry. John will also tell you some of the exciting projects his graduates have gone on to work on since completing the course.

He will introduce Sophie Monks (bio below), a graduate of the course, now working at Mackinnon and Saunders who will also present examples of her work in animation and discuss her career. Both John and Sophie will answer questions from the audience in a Q&A session. There will be a few examples of models and props on display.

Sophie Monks is a model maker and puppet fabricator who studied Modelmaking for Animation at the NFTS. Since graduating in 2019 she has worked on a number of projects, including Tim Burton’s ‘Lost Vegas’ exhibition, series 6 of Shaun the Sheep and Netflix’s ‘The House’.

Sophie Esslemont is a current NFTS Student. Prior to joining the school she trained and worked in content creation before coming to the NFTS to train as a production manager. She hopes to work in comedy and big feature films once she has graduated!

Chloe O Donoghue is a Film and English Literature graduate and is now studying Production Management at the NFTS. She’s always had a passion for film – the Harry Potter franchise in particular – and hopes one day to work on a big budget films just like them!

In Sophie and Chloe’s session… This will be a fun, interactive session that explores the role of a Production Manager and their important role in filmmaking! The session will inspire attendees to think creatively and logically, to budget and prioritise, all soft skills that a good production manager needs.

Ciara Gallagher is an Assistant Directing and Floor Management Student. She has years of experience as a Stage Manager across many different styles of theatre. Her dream is to work on location in Hawaii!
