The National Film and Television School was thrilled to see alumnus of the School and world renowned cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list!

Sir Roger was recognised for his exceptional contribution to film in the annual Honours List which also celebrated the careers of several leading figures from the worlds of entertainment, fashion, art and literature.

Since leaving the NFTS in 1975, two time Oscar winner Sir Roger has enjoyed an illustrious career in Cinematography, shooting a number of iconic films including The Shawshank Redemption, No Country For Old Men, Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049 and most recently, 1917. Throughout his career he has been recognised for his outstanding work, receiving the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers, being appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2013, winning the NFTS Sue Gibson BSC Cinematography Award in 2018 and the Variety Artisan Award at the Toronto International Film Festival the following year. Not to mention the five BAFTAs he has picked up for Best Cinematography throughout the years.

Sir Roger broke his streak of Oscar nominations with a win for Blade Runner 2049 in 2018 and then again in 2020 for 1917, both times being awarded Best Achievement in Cinematography.

Of his time studying at the NFTS, Sir Roger has previously said: “I have been very lucky since I began my career as a student of the NFTS in the 1970’s and I am every day grateful for the opportunity that I was given. The NFTS gave me a solid base from which to move forward.”

We’d like to offer a huge congratulations to Sir Roger from everyone at the NFTS - we are all incredibly proud of his many achievements!

The NFTS would also like to highlight the 123 health and social care workers included in the New Year Honours 2021 list – from the British Red Cross Ambulance Crew to care home managers – for their vital roles in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
