The final instalment in the Harry Potter franchise, directed by NFTS graduate David Yates, has now become the third highest ever grossing film of all time, having made $1.146 billion. Deathly Hallows part 2 has surpassed the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King to do so, and naturally claims highest-grossing film of the year, internationally, alongside this record.

The only other Harry Potter film nearly as successful was the first in the series, which fell just short of $1 billion in 2001.

If it wants to win highest grossing film though, it will have to beat Avatar, which brought in $2.8 billion back in 2009. But as the film has only been out for a few weeks, there's certainly a lot more life in Harry yet!

And if that wasn't exciting news enough, the Hollywood Reporter named the NFTS in its Top 10 list of best film schools worldwide!.

Final Harry Potter film Smashes Box Office Records in Opening Weekend

The Nfts graduate David Yates-directed final film in the Harry Potter series has beaten all records to become the highest grossing film in its opening weekend, in both the US and the UK, and has made over $475 million across the globe since in its opening weekend. It puts the film on track to pass the $1 billion mark by some - something that the first part of Deathly Hallows only just failed to do last year.

This film not only marks the end of a decade of record-breaking Harry Potter films, but also an end to our graduate involvement on all of the 8 films. From the very first film, our graduates have been in the camera, producing, sound and art depts. Then, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, graduate David Yates took the helm and became director of that, and the remaining three films. He stood up with the other directors and writer J.K. Rowling, at the BAFTA awards to accept the Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema, having directed exactly half the films in the franchise. We are very proud that our graduates have played such a large role in bringing this epic set of films to the big screen.

Because it is the end of an era, here’s one last reminder of all the crew from the NFTS who have worked on the films from end to beginning…
