31 May 2022: As Cannes Film Festival 2022 drew to a close, recent graduates of The National Film and Television School (NFTS) whose nine minute graduation animation Spring Roll Dream was selected for its world premiere at the prestigious festival, continued their celebrations as Director Mai Vu was announced winner of the L’Oréal Lights on Women Most Promising Female Short Film Director Award.

Presented by patron and juror Kate Winslet, the Lights on Women award is in its second year and aims to give tomorrow's talents the means to pursue their projects and accomplish their dreams, with Mai receiving 20,000 euros. The initiative offers unique recognition and financial support to the most promising female short film director-selected from the Short Films Competition and La Cinef's selection.

Spring Roll Dream follows Linh, a Vietnamese single mother who has successfully forged a life for herself and her son in America. But when her father visits from Vietnam and insists on cooking the family a traditional Vietnamese meal, Linh is confronted with the past and culture she left behind and the question of where it belongs in her family’s new life.

The film was one of only three animations that screened at the festival and one of only two films from the UK. Additionally, it was one of only 16 films chosen from over 1,500 entries from film schools all over the world, reflecting the diversity of filmmaking education globally.

Announcing the winner, Kate Winslet said of Spring Roll Dream: “The film I have selected is both as unique in its style as it is in its emotional poignancy. Reminding the audience how easy it is to lose touch with the basic but important things in life and how happiness doesn’t have to lie in what’s around the corner but how often times happiness can be right there in front of you, if you only remember to quiet the noise of daily life and just notice it.”

Mai graduated from the NFTS in March 2022 and we are super proud to see her receive such plaudits so early in her career. Congratulations to Mai for this amazing achievement and the rest of the Spring Roll Dream team for their success at Cannes 2022.
