NFTS graduation film Miss Curvy, a documentary directed by Ghada Eldemellawy has fought off competition from more than 1,500 films, to be named as a finalist in the 2020 Student Academy Awards in the Documentary (International Film Schools) category.
Miss Curvy is one of only three films to make the shortlist and is the first time an NFTS documentary has been selected for the Student Academy Awards. Ghada graduated from the NFTS Directing Documentary MA in February and her film features a Ugandan mother trying to navigate her past traumas through participating in Africa’s first beauty pageant for plus size women.
NFTS students are a regular feature at the Student Oscars. With an impressive seven Student Academy Awards to date, we are proud to be the most successful International Film School in the world at these prestigious awards. 2019 saw Directing Fiction Graduate Charlie Manton and his team fly to L.A, bringing home the Bronze Award for their film November 1st, starring Lindsay Duncan. More on their win can be found here. The Student Academy Awards were established in 1972 and previous recipients of the include Spike Lee, Robert Zemekis and Trey Parker.
Peter Dale, Head of NFTS Directing Documentary MA said: “I couldn’t be more delighted for Ghada and her team - not least because when she came to the NFTS, Ghada hadn't made a film before. Knowing that the course and tutors have enabled her to realise her filmmaking potential is really gratifying. I’m also thrilled that this is the first time the NFTS has been recognised in the Documentary category of the Student Oscars.”
The 2020 awards presentation took place on Thursday 15th October at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills. Congratulations to Ghada and all the Miss Curvy team!
