With four nominations and over 50 graduate credits on films nominated at this year’s Academy Awards, it was a glittering L.A evening that saw two NFTS graduates bring home a golden statuette on Sunday.

Roger Deakins won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for 1917, his second Oscar in three years following his first win for Blade Runner 2049 in 2017.

Roger has been nominated for an Oscar a record 16 times in the Cinematography category and on the night topped Rodrigo Prieto for The Irishman, Lawrence Sher for Joker, Robert Richardson for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Jarin Blaschke for The Lighthouse.

Stuart Wilson picked up the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for 1917 – his first Oscar having been nominated six times. Other nominees for Sound Mixing included Ad Astra, Ford V Ferrari, Joker and Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood.

NFTS Screenwriting graduate Krysty Wilson-Cairns was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for 1917 and posted on Twitter: "I am so proud to have been a part of the team that made this film. It has been my life’s joy."

Carthew Neal, an NFTS graduate of Creative Business for Entrepreneurs and Executives (CBEE), was nominated for his first Oscar for his role as Producer in the Best Picture category for Jo Jo Rabbit, attending the awards with the film’s writer/director Taika Waititi. Prior to the awards, Carthew told The Hollywood Reporter: I loved the message in the heart of the film. I think it's really important. Hate speech and hate crimes are on the rise. For me, it was important for the film to have some purpose in the world, to say something that will hopefully have people reflecting about things afterwards."

Congratulations to all NFTS alumni who won awards, were nominated or credited on films at the 2020 Oscars! We applaud your success and know it inspires our current and soon to graduate students to achieve their best work.
