13 NFTS Grads Credited at Venice Film Festival

From Michael Caine Documentary ‘My Generation’ to ‘Woodshock’ Starring Kirsten Dunst

The Venice Film Festival kicks off on August 30th and excitement is building as many of the films on show could be potential contenders for next year’s awards season. Films that are being talked about include Alexander Payne’s new sci-fi comedy-drama Downsizing, about a man who decides to shrink himself, which opens the festival; 1950’s set crime-thriller, Suburbicon directed by George Clooney and written by the Coen brothers and Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror Mother!, which stars Jennifer Lawrence.

There are also a number of films being screened that benefit from NFTS graduate involvement:

Victoria & Abdul is a period piece directed by Stephen Frears who is a regular visiting tutor to the School and a recipient of the NFTS David Lean Fellowship. The film, which is produced by NFTS graduate, Beeban Kidron, centres around the real-life friendship between a young Indian Muslim clerk and Queen Victoria, played by Judi Dench. Other NFTS alumni involved include: Junior Draughtsperson, Laura Mickiewicz; Lead Compositor, Dillan Nicholls; Sound Assistants, Michael Lee Taylor and Jennifer Annor; Assistant Colourist, Sara Buxton and Travel Coordinator, Sofia Guiotto.

My Generation is a documentary starring Michael Caine about his personal journey through 1960s London. Directed by David Batty and produced by NFTS graduate, Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, the documentary sees Caine travel back in time to talk to the like of The Beatles, Twiggy, David Bailey, Mary Quant, The Rolling Stones and David Hockney. NFTS alumnus, Jay Price is the Supervising Sound Editor.

Pin Cushion is being screened the opening film of the ‘Official Selection Venice Film Festival Critics' Week 2017 - Opening Night Gala’. Directed and written by Deborah Haywood, produced by NFTS graduate, Gavin Humphries and with music composed by NFTS alumna, Natalie Holt, Pin Cushion is an all-girl gothic fairy tale set in the British working-class suburbs.

Under the Tree directed by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson is about a man who is accused of adultery by his ex-fiancée and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a dispute between his parents and their neighbours regarding an old and beautiful tree. NFTS graduate, Sylvester Holm is Sound Designer on the film.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s directorial debut, Woodshock stars Kirsten Dunst and centres around a woman who falls deeper into paranoia after taking a deadly drug. NFTS graduate, Evan Jolly is Conductor/Orchestrator on the film.
