NFTS Cinematography MA students were treated to a week of masterclasses from industry leading Directors of Photography (DOPs) as part of the school’s new ‘Perspectives in Light’ workshop. DOPs included: Dick Pope BSC (Oscar-nominee, Mr. Turner and The Illusionist), David Katznelson BSC (Alumnus and Emmy-winner for Downton Abbey), Tim Palmer BSC (Alumnus, Doctor Who, Indian Summers), John Mathieson BSC (Oscar-nominee, Gladiator and Phantom of the Opera), Tony Pierce-Roberts BSC (Oscar-nominee, A Room With A View and Howard’s End), Rob Hardy BSC (Ex Machina and Boy A) and Angus Hudson BSC (Star Wars and Last Passenger).

In the workshop the students act as the camera crew for the DOPs, allowing them to observe how each of the DOPs approach a scene, their specific lighting style and how the camera can be used to highlight the story and drama in any scene. Each DOP was given a day to shoot with the actors and students and this year the film Revolutionary Road was chosen to provide the seven scenes.

Oliver Stapleton (NFTS Co-Head of Cinematography) commented: “It was fantastic to get such a varied group of leading cinematographers to teach our students. Each one brought something different to the workshop and helped show the different approaches and styles that can be brought, even in the most subtle of ways.”

Current Cinematography student, Jonathan Flint said after attending one of the masterclasses: “Truly humbling to be watching this level of talent at work.”

The workshop will now become an annual event at the NFTS with the hope to bring in even more varied cinematographers. To find out more about the Cinematography MA, please visit https://www.nfts.co.uk/our-courses/masters/cinematography
