‘The Tale of Wilson ‘Snowflake’ Bentley’tells the story of the man who discovered that no two snowflakes are the same. Roland and Tiana came up with the idea, which was picked by a panel of judges including Oscar winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, Battle of the Sexes), in response to a challenge from Autograph Collection Hotels to come up with a story to express the idea ‘Exactly Like Nothing Else.’  The two NFTS runners up in the competition won prize money from Autograph Collection hotels, which further supports the NFTS by providing a scholarship for a student to study at the school.

Autograph Collection Hotels funded the winning graduates to make their idea into a film, which was shot on the main stage at the NFTS just before Christmas.  You can take a peek at the making of the film here

The finished film was premiered to Industry guests at a special screening and panel Q&A event held at Autograph Collection’s St Ermin’s Hotel.  Introducing the screening, John Licence, Vice President Premium & Select Brands, Marriott International Europe said “As a brand that celebrates individuality and creative vision, it has been a pleasure partnering with the NFTS over the past year and supporting talented, up-and-coming filmmakers and writers through this Short Film Award.  “The Tale of Wilson ‘Snowflake’ Bentley” is a charming film that perfectly encapsulates our brand ethos and is so representative of the talent, dedication and creativity lying within the NFTS community.  It has been wonderful to be part of the process seeing it come to life.”

After the screening there was a Q&A with Director & Writer Roland Kennedy, Writer Tiana Linden, Production Designer Isobel Dunhill and Executive Producer Venetia Hawkes.  The team revealed some of the techniques they’d used to achieve the film, including miniature model making, glass painting and puppeteering to ‘fly’ the lead, played by child actor Stanley Warbrick, through a snowstorm.   Roland Kennedy said, "The film was a great opportunity to work with a wonderful team of creatives to explore the techniques of early cinema and photography to create a fairy-tale version of this extraordinary historic story."
