NFTS Scotland: Intimacy Co-ordination Workshop Online

Short course

Overview

Delivered online, in partnership with NFTS Cymru Wales and NFTS Leeds accessed via Zoom.

Increasingly screen productions engage Intimacy Coordinators to work with actors and production when filming intimate content. Shows like Bridgerton, Sex Education, I Hate Suzie and I May Destroy You have brought powerful scenes of intimacy to the screen, to a great extent because of the contribution Intimacy Coordinators who are becoming an integral part of the filming process. In her BAFTA acceptance speech, Michaela Coel thanked Intimacy Coordinators “for making the space safe, for creating physical, emotional and professional boundaries so that we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power without being exploited or abused in the process.” However, it’s not just about preventing harm, it is about creating the space for everyone to do their best work in safety and comfort for the sake of the narrative.

This interactive 3 hour course is aimed at all crew members working in film and television drama production who interact with or are affected by the work of ICs (from Directors and Producers, 1st ADs, Costume, Makeup, Stunts and Camera as well as others like Chaperones). It will explore the role of the IC, how they work with other departments and production personnel to create the best environment for the best work.

Course content will include:

• What is included in the concept of “intimacy” on screen;
• The history of the role and why it is so needed;
• What is an intimacy coordinator and how do they work?
• The roles and responsibilities of different departments and crew members working with actors and ICs
• What happens before during and after filming intimate scenes
• Closed set protocols
• Assessing Risk and how to mitigate it
• Further resources

By the end of the workshop learners will:

• Understand the purpose of working with ICs
• Know how the ICs work and integrate with the rest of a production team and on set crew
• Understand how to work collaboratively and effectively with ICs from the perspective of their own role
