The NFTS is the only UK film school with its own film studios and its own television studio, both equipped to Industry standards, and with an annual production slate of around one hundred and fifty films our studios and production facilities are always busy.
To support all this activity, we have extensive facilities and equipment stores, and technical services staff, professional electricians and fulltime carpenters/set builders are on hand to support both learning and productions.
The NFTS has three large sound stages which are used for major productions. The television studio is fitted with a DMX lighting system, lightweight cameras with modern pedestals, galleries housing sound, vision and lighting equipment.
Post production facilities rival those of many professional post production houses. Editing students use Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premier (CS6). Digital post production has some of the most advanced digital post production systems, including Nucoda Film Master, AVID Symphony, Filmlight Baselight, Autodesk Flame and DaVinci Resolve. Facilities are continually updated to keep pace with innovations in technology.

For sound post production, there’s a sophisticated array of Pro Tools digital track-laying and editing systems and two fully equipped Dolby surround-sound dubbing theatres, plus a third, smaller stereo theatre.
Composers are allocated their own dedicated electronic keyboards and computerised sampling systems, including Logic ProX and Sibelius Scorewriting software, sampler software and an extensive orchestral library. There are eight composers suites and a music recording studio.
A fully equipped, interactive design studio uses 2D/3D computer graphics systems and A4, A3 and AO colour printer/plotters.
Animation is resourced with sixteen digital animation cameras connected to PCs running Dragonframe stop motion software. Software systems for image manipulation and origination include Autodesk Creative Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
Our range of film and digital video cameras includes Arri Alexa, Arri SRIII (S16mm), Aaton XTR Prod(S16mm), Aaton 35mm, Black Magic Pocket and AVCHD cameras. A large stock of grip equipment and a wide range of lighting allows cinematographers to maximise their creativity in any situation.
The Games course has two labs equipped with a games development PC for each student, HD projection and all current games consoles including Android and IOS for mobiles.
The cinema and screening theatre can project from 35mm, DCP’s, HD tape formats, AVCHD cards, DVD, Blue-Ray, and media files on the server, and are used for rushes and work-in-progress screenings, as well as for curriculum and other screenings. Thanks to Christie Digital Systems, we have DCI compliant digital cinema projectors and a DCP server. Students already used to creating and carrying out post production in the digital domain are now able to see their rushes and final graded on-line masters with a new realism, a particular benefit for cinematographers who can see the images they originate under the best possible conditions.
