This 4Skills funded course is delivered by NFTS Cymru Wales. We are looking for participants from Wales, or surrounding counties.
About the course: This three-day course offers an in-depth exploration of the casting process, the welfare of participants, and the ethical considerations involved in unscripted TV production.
- Day 1 covers casting strategies, creating an inclusive cast, designing casting campaigns, and the importance of effective interviews and informed consent.
- Day 2 focuses on screening potential contributors, the importance of self-disclosure forms, due diligence, managing vulnerable individuals, and ensuring psychological welfare.
- Day 3 dives into preparing contributors for filming, handling welfare on-location, providing aftercare, including post-TX support and dealing with complaints.
Throughout, the course will touch on the use of AI tools, social media strategies, and legal protocols. Mel will provide real-world examples and will be joined by some local guest speakers too.
Tutor: Mel Walden is an experienced Casting Executive with 25 years’ experience in producing and casting for all the major broadcasters. She has led the casting on talent shows, competition formats, observational documentaries and social experiment format and has worked with children & teens, young offenders, people living with cancer, disabled people, among others. She recently appeared on a Duty of Care panel for the RTS and is a mentor and trainer for Pact and Screenskills. Credits include Big Brother (Channel 4), The Voice (BBC One), Million Pound Menu (BBC Two), The Savoy (ITV), Junior Taskmaster (C4) and Stand Up To Cancer Appeal Films (C4).
Who is it for? Coordinators, Researchers, Assistant Producers, new Directors or any role where finding great contributors is key for unscripted television. For those who wish to step up, upskill and expand their knowledge of best practice when working with contributors and support and safeguard all those taking part in unscripted or entertainment programmes. You must be 18+ and based in Wales, or surrounding counties.
