Introducing The NFTS Disabled Talent Bursary

The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is proud to announce the launch of a new funding opportunity for disabled talent looking to study with us. As part of our commitment to making the creative industries more accessible, the Disabled Talent Bursary aims to assist students who face additional costs due to the nature of their disability.

Five dedicated bursaries are now available for disabled students applying to study on full-time MA and Diploma courses from September 2024, providing up to £5,000 for each year of study. Additional bursary support is also available for student applying to study part-time Diploma and Certificate courses from September 2024 of up to £1,000 per student. Students will also be eligible to apply for further funding from the School to help with tuition fee costs if their course is applicable.

The NFTS Disabled Talent Bursary could be used to help with costs such as:

  • Accessible accommodation
  • Carers accommodation
  • Additional heating and electricity costs
  • Travel expenses
  • Specialist and mobility equipment

NFTS Disability Advocate Hamish Thompson said; “It’s clear that one of the biggest barriers to entry for D/deaf, disabled and neurodiverse talent in our industry is finance. Scope’s Disability Price Tag and other campaigns show an eye watering disparity between the living standards of disabled people compared to non-disabled people with a similar income. This Bursary is designed to work in conjunction with other schemes, such as Disabled Students Allowance, to ensure that our disabled students have peace of mind. Alongside this funding, we will continue to work internally, with the community, and with our fellow partners and members at the TV Access Project, to push for the wider changes needed to achieve full inclusion by 2030.”

As with all NFTS funding opportunities, on receiving an offer of a place on one of our courses, applicants will be invited to apply for funding. Applications will be assessed by a panel comprised of NFTS representatives and the School’s Disability Advocate.

The National Film and Television School is keen to take additional steps towards a more inclusive film, television and games industries and will continue to develop and secure additional support for those who need it.
