Visual Effects Students Explore Alternate Dimensions With Virtual Production Technology
After years of experimenting with ground-breaking technology, a scientist finally puts her calculations to the test and successfully transports herself into an alternate dimension, where she finds her estimations and predictions can only prepare her for so much.
Visual Effects MA students at the National Film & Television School (NFTS) have been experimenting with ground-breaking technology to bring Reality Heist to life, an original five-minute film that uses cutting-edge Virtual Production techniques.
Virtual Production involves using an LED wall that allows productions to use dynamic backgrounds that are rendered in real-time, solving a multitude of problems and opening up a new range of opportunities for storytelling, including in-camera visual effects.
Ian Murphy, Head of Visual Effects at the NFTS said; “The VFX industry is changing. It’s important with these exciting advances in technology, that our students train to be part of the entire creative decision making process. As well as needing VFX artists in post-production, we also need trained individuals who understand the entire VFX process and who are resourceful, communicative and comfortable on set.”
Watch the video below to hear our students run through the behind the scenes process of making Reality Heist and find out more about VFX roles on a Virtual Production set.
After completing their course, these students will graduate in March 2023 with this project and many more as calling cards that showcase the vast range of skills they have learnt and put into practice at the NFTS.
Past graduates have gone on to work on major productions including Pistol, Jurrassic World: Dominion, News Of The World and multiple Marvel titles.
Applications are open for the NFTS VFX (CG), VFX (Compositing) and Colour Grading and Finishing MAs!
