Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Iona grew up exploring the unique country that surrounded and shaped her. Gaining an appreciation for the quality and subtlety of light, and eager to capture it, she found photography and later, film, the mediums in which she could do so.
After reading Art History and Film Studies at The University of St. Andrews, Iona embarked on a specialised training at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she gained a master’s degree in Cinematography.
Working across both documentary and fiction film, her work has screened at film festivals worldwide including the London Short Film Festival and the Korea International Short Film Festival. Some of her recent work includes Gown, a short documentary supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that delved into themes of diasporic identity in Southwest London and was screened as part of the Global Threads Kingston Exhibition. With a keen eye for the visual minutiae and cinematic techniques that honour the complexities of life, Iona seeks to tell important stories.
