NFTS Student Documentary 'Welcome Home Freckles' Nominated For 2026 EE BAFTA Film Award

The National Film and Television School is delighted to announce that Welcome Home Freckles, an NFTS student made documentary, has today been nominated at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards in the British Short Film category.

This nomination continues an exceptional period of success for the School in the same category. Following a 2025 win for British Short Film with Rock, Paper, Scissors, and a 2024 win for Jellyfish and Lobster, Welcome Home Freckles is now in the running for 2026, and the NFTS is thrilled to mark a third consecutive year of BAFTA recognition.

Welcome Home Freckles

Based just outside London, in Beaconsfield, the National Film and Television School has been providing the industry with the next generation of talent for over 50 years, and has built a reputation as a globally renowned production and talent powerhouse.

Welcome Home Freckles is a 2025 student graduate documentary from director/producer Huiju Park. After four years apart, the film sees Huiju return to Daegu, South Korea, to confront the unresolved family conflicts and deep-rooted domestic violence that plagued her childhood. Through conversations with her parents, she discovers the generational cycle of abuse and realises that only she can break it. The film has already earned international recognition, winning the 2025 Grierson Best Student Documentary Award and being selected for the prestigious AFI Fest and Visions du Réel International Film Festival.

The nomination for Welcome Home Freckles for British Short Film is a wonderful reflection of the extraordinary talent and dedication coming out of the NFTS and of the creative momentum our filmmakers are building.

The NFTS success story is not limited to a nomination for British Short Film. The School is incredibly proud to see our talented alumni once again make an impact on this year’s BAFTA Film Award nominations list.

Sentimental Value, written and directed by Joachim Trier and edited by Olivier Bugge Coutte, continued its recent Oscars success, adding eight more nominations including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay and Film Not in the English Language. Writer Eoin Doran was also nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his work on Wasteman. Lynn Ramsay’s Die My Love was nominated for Outstanding British Film and other titles nominated featuring NFTS alumni in key roles include My Father’s Shadow, Pillion, Hamnet, Frankenstein, Bugonia, Wicked: For Good, The Voice of Hind Rajab, F1, and many more!

NFTS Director Jon Wardle said; “It’s thrilling to see our students and alumni continue to push the boundaries of storytelling and have this recognised year after year by BAFTA. The nomination for Welcome Home Freckles for British Short Film is a wonderful reflection of the extraordinary talent and dedication coming out of the NFTS and of the creative momentum our filmmakers are building. Having graduated less than 12 months ago, we couldn’t be prouder of the achievements of Huiju Park and the Welcome Home Freckles team, and we can’t wait to see how they continue to shape the future of film and documentary making. We wish all our alumni every success at the BAFTA Awards.”
