Supported by Prime Video Pathway, NFTS Scotland are delighted to build on its Set Ready: Working in the Make-up Department short course with a two-week practical hair and make-up course, followed by a production placement on a prestigious Sean Connery Talent Lab short film, supported by BBC Film.
Taught by Marion McCormack, (Line of Duty, Outlander, The Nest, Holby City, The Inbetweeners Movie), this course is designed to empower and elevate make-up artists who are new and early entrants to Film and TV, with the essential techniques & skills to confidently work their way up in the Hair & Make-up department.
This practical course covers the essential paperwork and protocols, practising character hair and make-up styles within a set time limit, practising quick changes, character progression using continuity, basic wig and barbering skills and dressing techniques for different looks. You will visit a production set to experience daily life on set, meet your Sean Connery Talent Lab creative team and make sure you have everything you need to prepare for and be placed on their 4-day short film. We’ll also help you with focusing your CV for future film and TV work.

Practical Class
Practising character hair and make-up styles within a set time limit
Practise of quick changes
Character progression make up using storyline and continuity
Basic wig skills
Wig Blocking
Prepping and setting techniques,
Dressing techniques for required looks including padding and pieces
Dirtying down looks using different techniques and different product choices
Additional skills based on SCTL scripts
Meet the SCTL team, discuss requirements for each character and start preparation
Week 2
Barbering Workshop
Working on your script, character breakdowns, research and vision boards
Set Visit - Shadowing the make-up artists, doing final checks and watching how
a day on set works
Make sure you are all set with everything you need for your 4 day short film.
You have your Script ready, all character breakdowns, the kit required
Practise any looks or ideas you have for the shoot.
