TV Entertainment Students Go Live with Brand New Series, After Hours!

Directing & Producing Television Entertainment MA students at The National Film & Television School recently celebrated a huge achievement, going live for the first time with four episodes of a brand-new series! After Hours, a multi-camera entertainment show was stripped across four evenings, airing live and streamed online Tuesday to Friday from 5pm with a mix of art, music and culture content.

After Hours was developed, directed and produced by first year Television Entertainment students who were assisted by Camera Operators, Vision Mixers, Sound students and more from across the School. All collaborated closely within a live studio environment to ensure each episode aired successfully – working hard to turn their bold creative vision into production reality whilst also utilising the School’s cutting-edge Virtual Production wall.

After Hours was hosted by talented presenters Kaffe Keating and Laura Fleming and the jam-packed series featured interviews, performances, music and reviews from the worlds of film, theatre, art and culture with After Hours guests including actor/stuntwoman Shaina West (The Woman King, Black Widow), Parapole World Champion Andrew Gregory and documentary filmmaker Sophia Seymour among many others.

Karan Dhar, TV Entertainment student and director of episode 1 said “Only at the NFTS could I have the opportunity to operate in a high pressure live TV environment where months of preparation and hard work boil down to one 45 minute take. It was absolutely surreal to call the shots on a live music performance being sat in the gallery next to NFTS Head of TV Entertainment David G Croft who directed Live Aid! This experience was fundamental to my growth as an experience creator and has given me the tools and the confidence I need to direct a live show at a very high standard.”

First year student Tamzin Murray reflected on her experience as producer of episode 1: “I once heard management being described as ‘putting out little fires’ and as producers we problem solve in a similar way. Producing the first After Hours episode was a huge confidence boost and career defining experience as we sourced and managed the logistics of each feature from the acts, interviews, guests and bands. It was a welcome challenge as it stretched my ability to think fast and find solutions all while maintaining a calm, clear and positive studio environment - especially when highly pressured.”

Congratulations to all the students, who worked so hard to bring After Hours to life. Making live TV requires huge reserves of ambition, skill and nerves of steel, with everyone involved bringing their own set of unique talents to the studio floor both in the planning and live phase of the show!
