About the Summer Sessions
We are excited to announce the return of our popular Access NFTS Summer Sessions for 2026!
These FREE hands on sessions are open to young people aged 11–16 and will run throughout August at our Beaconsfield campus. Each week, participants can choose from at least four different 2 hour workshops, each exploring a unique career pathway in the Film, TV and Games industries.
Girls Sound Squad: Movie Audio & Secret Superpowers
Behind every film scene, and every TV interview, is a whole team of people working together, trying to best capture that one moment in time. The head of the sound department is the Production or Broadcast Sound Mixer, but this person can’t even begin to do their job well unless their assistant gets the mic placement just right! That’s harder than it might seem - not because of the technical skills alone but the hurdles that come from working in teams with other humans.
The real superpower on any film or TV set is emotional intelligence, resilience, and team work. Cranky presenter? You’ve to invade their personal space and put mics under their clothes. A stressed Prime Minister is about to get the boot, doing an interview on live TV - while he’s prepping his big interview and running to the toilet from nerves, you’ve to persuade him to have a radio mic on in time for the broadcast. An actor is feeling fragile because they’ve spent the morning in makeup and they have intense nerves - and you’ll walk in at the height of those emotions.
Step 1: Listening and watching
Learn to listen to a room and to people the way a sound professional does. Begin to notice the things that we are invited to ignore every day. (Perfect for anyone who’s been told they can hear the grass grow.) Watch how people’s clothes and jewellery move. Group listening in real life, and then through microphones.
Step 2: The Stealth Mic Challenge
Learn how to hide tiny "lavalier" microphones on actors. You will test out the best places to clip them so they capture crisp voices perfectly while staying completely invisible to the camera
Step 3: Dealing with Drama (Roleplay!)
Film and TV sets can get crazy. You might have to mic up a stressed-out politician or an awkward actor who is having a bad day! Jump into fun roleplay games where you will practice staying calm, reading the room, and using smart people skills to get the job done.
