NFTS Leeds: Interview Skills for Factual TV

Short course

Overview

This 2 day interactive, practical course is for non journalists who want to develop their interview skills for TV or film documentaries and other non-news factual programmes, whether a presenter, producer, director, or self shooting.

Day 1 will look at the different types of interviews that are used in TV and the different techniques that can be used. We’ll look at the practicalities around doing interviews and how to get the best out of interviewees. We’ll see good examples and talk about the challenges of getting the tech right in the moment.
We’ll cover casting to get the right interviewees, good practice and duty of care when dealing with members of the public whilst also getting what you need for your film. And you will start to plan your interviews for day 2.

Day 2 will be practical when you will be conducting and filming interviews and will be able to review them as a group.

The course will be interactive with a lot of group work, discussion as well as the practical filming and interviewing. The final activity will be for everyone to record their own personal plan for what they will do next / how they will develop their own practice.
