Stepping into the role of a Producer Director means taking full creative and logistical control of a shoot day – and doing it with confidence. This two-day course is designed for researchers, assistant producers, and anyone looking to move up into producing and directing in unscripted tv.
Over the two days, participants will gain a clear understanding of how to prepare for and run a successful shoot on location. With the help of real-world examples, exercises, and tools used by experienced PDs, this course demystifies the process of planning, filming, and troubleshooting in the field.
Whether you’re new to the role or looking to sharpen your skills, this course provides a practical foundation that will improve your efficiency, creativity, and confidence - allowing you to enjoy your day on location.
The course will include:
- Planning- break down the filming day into manageable tasks.
- What footage will be needed (and what won’t be needed)
- Shot-lists. Preparing an easy to read list of footage to gather on location.
- Scheduling the shoot.
- Directing technique. Positioning cameras, directing people and your role in managing the shoot.
- Covering observational scenes.
- Interviews - scene set-ups, cover and question technique.
- Basic lighting for interviews - positioning panel lights and using natural light.
- Self Shooting considerations - strengths and weaknesses of filming a piece yourself.
- Problem solving - avoiding barriers to filming at the planning stage and on location.
- Preparing what you need to take on location - all the essentials that will help your day run smoothly.
