Script reading and reporting is often one of the first steps to breaking into the TV drama or film industry.
It’s an incredibly important job, with readers playing a crucial role in whether a script is accepted or rejected by a production company. Get it right and you can forge great relationships with producers and execs, as well as potentially bagging yourself that elusive first job in development.
But how does one go about writing a successful report? How do you analyse a script if you’ve never worked in drama before? What are companies looking for and how can you make yourself stand out? This course aims to demystify the process of script analysis, sharpen your report writing skills and help you on your way to getting your first job in the industry.
Please note, if you are applying for a course in Scotland, this course runs over 2 consecutive Fridays with work to be completed between the two sessions.
Over two days, with a week in between to complete a script report, the course will cover:
Day 1: How to recognise a good story/script
On this day you’ll learn the broad basics of how to recognise the potential of a good script including:
• Tone/voice - What is it? How do you judge it?
• Structure - The Basics, a short intro into the 5 act structure
• World building/Theme - how much is too much in the first episode and how to judge when someone has done so successfully
At the end of the day participants will be given a script to read in preparation for the next day
Day 2: How to do the report
We'll break down writing a report for the script read overnight and discuss the common pitfalls that new readers make when doing their reports. You’ll also learn how to make your report standout. We'll also discuss being a reader in the industry and what that means. How much insider knowledge do you need? What prep can you do to make your report as helpful as possible?
