Join The Screen Industry With ScreenSkills Scholarship For NFTS Location Sound Diploma
The National Film and Television School (NFTS) and ScreenSkills are proud to offer another life-changing opportunity for aspiring sound recordists seeking to make their mark in the screen industry. The aim is to open doors and break down financial barriers, empowering eligible applicants to pursue their passion for sound and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive industry.
The NFTS Location Sound Recording for Film and Television Diploma is supported by a ground-breaking scholarship which, this year, will be offered to those who are Black, Asian or from lower socio-economic backgrounds, applying to join the next intake of the course in September 2023. The scholarship will cover the full cost of the 15-month course and provide a £5,000 contribution to living expenses.
India Holdstock joined the NFTS Location Sound Recording Diploma in September 2022. She was the recipient of a ScreenSkills bursary aimed at encouraging more women to join the sound recording industry and is an example of how the course and scholarship can transform lives.
Reflecting on her journey to date, India commented, “I never thought studying at NFTS would be an option for me as I could not afford the course fees or the cost of living. However, when I saw that there was a scholarship from ScreenSkills, this suddenly became a real possibility for me.”
The Diploma offers an unrivalled opportunity to learn the practical skills required for a successful career in sound recording. Led by award-winning Production Sound Mixer Judi Lee-Headman (Anansi Boys, The Capture, Homeland), the course provides hands-on experience in recording sound for picture, both on location and in the state-of-the-art 4K multi-camera television studio. Students also gain expertise in Fisher Boom techniques, in-studio music recording and post-production techniques. The comprehensive curriculum, taught exclusively by industry professionals, prepares students to excel in this dynamic field.
Emphasising the impact of the course, India continued, “The bursary has helped me by covering the cost of the course that I otherwise wouldn’t have had any way of affording. It’s also been hugely helpful with going towards my living costs.”
By alleviating financial burdens, the scholarship enables students to fully immerse themselves in the course and maximise their learning opportunities. India added, “If it wasn’t for this scholarship, I would have to get a part-time job alongside the course, limiting the number of productions I would be available to work on. I don’t think the course would have been something I could have even considered if it wasn’t for the ScreenSkills bursary.”
