NFTS Sound Design Wins MPSE Golden Reel Award For Eighth Year Running!
Huge congratulations to National Film and Television School Sound Design MA graduate Dan Hibbert for bringing home the MPSE Verna Fields Award for Student Filmmakers, the eighth NFTS graduate in a row to do so!
The 70th Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards were held last week and are hailed as one of the most prized accolades in the sound editing world.
“Being able to go on stage after such influential figures was a moment I’ll never forget."
National Film and Television School students consistently make up around 50% of nominations each year at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards, which often equates to half the course being invited to head to LA for the ceremony, and this year was no different! Dan was nominated alongside three fellow students Guldem Masa (Ascent), Carlos San Juan Juanchi (Spring Roll Dream) and Oliver Mapp (Whiteboy).
Dan was named winner for his work on the 2022 graduation fiction film Brutal, a surrealist, psychological thriller.
The film, set in a bleak, menacing, nightmarish tower block focuses on a young mother named Maya. Brutal addresses the consequences of systematic societal shame brought upon women who are faced with bringing an unwanted child, conceived non-consensually, into the world and the subsequent inner turmoil that proceeds it.

Below, Dan Hibbert reflects on his win and time training at the National Film and Television School.
“Being able to go on stage after such influential figures as Jerry Bruckheimer, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle and the sound-post teams behind the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, All Quiet on the Western Front and so many other incredible feats of sonic work was a moment I’ll never forget. Just to be nominated amongst some of my incredibly talented peers both from the NFTS and from around the world was a massive honour in itself.
I'm also very proud to have represented the NFTS at the award show - the Sound Design MA run by the tirelessly dedicated tutors Chris Pow and Guy Hake has equipped me with all the skills - technically, creatively and collaboratively - to head straight into the world of freelance sound-post and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunities that this has already opened up for me.
Thank you so much to the MPSE for the award, to the NFTS for all the support throughout my studies (and after!), to director Jordan Chandler and NFTS crew for such an expressive and satisfying creative collaboration on Brutal, to my family, friends and my amazing life partner Derby for all their continued support!”
