Documentary: Storytelling & Filmmaking

What makes a great documentary? And what skills are required to create one?

This comprehensive 5 day course will guide you through storytelling and filmmaking skills in unscripted TV. You will discuss what makes great story, how to prepare for your shoot, how to work with contributors and presenters plus you’ll gain hands-on experience using an FS7 camera.

Tutor Wayne Derrick has produced specialist factual and current affairs programmes for the BBC Channel 4, Channel 5, PBS and National Geographic Channel. His directing credits include “Drain The Oceans”, “Being Neil Armstrong” and “Tribe”.

This course includes, but is not limited to:

What makes a good story?
How to come up with great doc ideas
Prepare for your shoot
Getting the best out of your interviewees or presenters
Character development
Shooting techniques using the FS7 camera
Demystifying the post production process
Working with team members to deliver paperwork
Delivery and wrap

We ask you to bring:

3 documentaries you have enjoyed to discuss with the group
Up to 2 ideas of your own for a documentary

Freelance Rate: £850
Corporate Rate: £1,700

Bursaries, supported by the Welsh Government, are also available for those who are eligible.

BURSARY INFORMATION

A limited number of bursaries are available for all of our short courses. If you wish to apply for a bursary to contribute to the costs of your course, please read the bursary guidelines below carefully to confirm your eligibility. Please do not apply to a course unless you are sure you meet the bursary eligibility criteria, or if you are able to pay for the course by other means.

Please apply as far in advance of the course date as possible to give yourself the best chance of securing a supported place as we may not be able to accommodate all applications. We aim to advise successful applicants no later than 10 working days prior to the course start date.
