Freelancing is a central part of working life in the TV, film, and creative industries, with over a third of the workforce operating on a self-employed basis. Understanding how to navigate the freelance world is crucial to building a sustainable and resilient career.

This session provides an overview of what freelancing involves, including the realities of inconsistent work patterns, the financial and professional responsibilities of being self-employed, and how to structure your career for long-term progression.

You’ll also explore strategies for managing the uncertainties that come with freelance life, including maintaining momentum between jobs and building a strong professional reputation.

Led by Samina Kiyani, a freelance professional with over 30 years of experience across TV, film, journalism, and media training. Samina began her career as a Floor Manager and First Assistant Director on popular unscripted productions including Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Big Brother, The Big Breakfast, MTV, and commercials for global brands such as Kellogg’s, Schwarzkopf, and Skittles. She later worked as a TV Producer and Broadcast Journalist.

Having built a long-term career across multiple departments, experiencing first-hand the challenges and rewards of freelance life, Samina now supports others in navigating their way into TV and film careers.
