Do you love comedy shows and dream of working in the industry?
This course gives an overview on how to break into TV comedy, tips from industry professionals, practical exercises and workshops with working comics that will help you learn how to flex your funny bones!
Over the course you will learn the structure of the industry and opportunities within it, how to scout for talent, develop working relationships and how to shape and showcase your ideas to appeal to producers and commissioners. With guidance from industry professionals and talent, you will gain practical experience in hands on activities and develop an understanding on how to break into the industry.
DAY ONE: INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AND “FINDING FUNNY” - You will get an overview of the structure of the comedy industry, the different areas within it and advice from industry professionals on how to crack into the market.
DAY TWO: SELLING A COMEDY IDEA – You will learn about how to sell a comedy idea – understanding commissioning briefs, pitch docs, taster tapes, screen tests and outlines.
DAY THREE: WORKSHOP WITH COMEDIANS – Working alongside circuit stand-up comedians, who will pose as our on-screen talent, you will become ‘staff’ on a topical comedy show and asked to generate character ideas and concepts to put into the show, with comedians providing feedback at the end of the day
Tutor and Comedy Producer Steph McIntosh has over fifteen years of experience working in Comedy and Entertainment TV in both non-scripted and scripted production and development. Having worked with a range of comedians from Rob Brydon, Jack Whitehall, Alan Carr, Greg Davies and Rhod Gilbert she has produced a variety of shows including Stand Up to Cancer, Would I Lie To You, The Channel 4 Mash Up, Ask Rhod Gilbert and 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
