The first professional role for many new writers is to be part of a writers room, working on an episode of a tv show that fits with the lead writer’s vision. The world, tone and characters of the show will have been established by the lead writer and it will be up to the new writer to absorb this information and do their best to emulate it.
The purpose of this course is to simulate that experience and give participants a deeper understanding of how to integrate into a narrative world that they did not create. Over the course of 2 days, participants will work collaboratively as a group to produce key elements of the writers room process.
Prior to the course, all participants will be required to watch 4 episodes of an existing tv detective series and make notes on any observations they have about the show. Over the course of the two days, we will first break down the show into its essential parts, analysing structure, tone and character. For any police procedural there will be an established format which can be intuited and used as a model for future episodes. On the second day, we will as a group, beat out what could be a potential episode of the show.
