National Film And Television School Holds Fast On Top Film School Status

The National Film and Television School is incredibly proud to be included in The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 15 International Film Schools list for the 13th successive year.

The School is honoured to once again be the only UK film school featured in the annual ranking, which takes into consideration facilities, equipment, quality of teaching, networking opportunities, industry reputation and more. Other renowned international schools featured on the list include the Australian Film, TV and Radio School, Toronto Film School and ECAM.

The Hollywood Reporter highlighted the NFTS’ as "the UK's most prestigious film school' and celebrated the achievements of our alumni including Molly Manning Walker's Un Certain Regard win at Cannes for her directorial debut How to Have Sex and graduation film Killing Boris Johnson being the only UK student short film picked up for the La Cinef competition.

13 Things You Might Not Know About The National Film And Television School

  1. Location, location, location! The NFTS is based in Buckinghamshire which has supplied locations for a huge number of iconic scenes from Bridgerton to the upcoming Wicked! Not to mention we’re nestled in between the studio giants of the industry including Pinewood, Shepperton and Leavesden. We also have bases that run short courses across the UK in Scotland, Leeds and Wales!

  2. Why Buckinghamshire? The School has been developed on the site of what was a functioning film studio, Beaconsfield Studios - our main stage is part of the original building and is 100 years old (but has since been fully refurbished of course!)

  3. Renowned Japanese composer and music producer Ryuichi Sakamoto donated his grand concert piano to the School in 2018. Students can play the same keys of this Oscar-winning musician while studying on our Composing MA!

  4. Some of the nation’s best loved animations were born here! Wallace and Gromit, Peppa Pig and The Rubbish World of Dave Spud all have close ties to the School. It’s said that the inspiration for the rocket in the classic Wallace and Gromit adventure A Grand Day Out is the School’s emergency sprinkler system tank…can you see the resemblance?

  5. You can study games at one of the world’s best film schools! We now offer two games design and development pathways, a practical in-person, 2 year MA and a 6 month online indie games certificate…we would add it to our name but it would make it a bit too long! #nationalfilmtelevisionandgamesschool

     
  6. We have 18 dedicated shooting spaces for students to use on our over 13,000m² site

     
  7. Our credits statistics tell the story! 85% of UK broadcaster spend on high end television and two thirds of all Netflix productions have at least one NFTS graduate in a key role. The School partners with some of the biggest names in the industry to provide our training, making the transition into work as seamless as possible for our graduates.

     
  8. The National Film and Television School has a pot of almost a million pounds worth of funding to offer to UK students each year to enable them to study with us. This is critical to ensuring people from a variety of backgrounds can get access to our growing industry!

  11. All production costs are met by the School…what does that mean? When you start your training with us, you won’t be required to spend any of your own money on the films and projects you work on here. The School provides budgets for the productions, creating a level playing field for all.

     
  12. The School runs an outreach programme that is designed to engage, inform and inspire the next generation of potential creative talent. Access NFTS hosts a huge array of events across the country throughout the year to show the incredible career paths available in film, television and games.

Take a peek at the back of some of the plush red chairs in our Ossie Morris cinema and you might find a shiny gold plaque dedicated to iconic members of the industry, supporters and close friends of the NFTS. Names include screenwriter/producer Ashley Pharaoh (Ashes to Ashes, Life on Mars) in seat 9D and costume designer Elsa Fennell (Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever) in seat 11G!
