Storytelling for real-world change: building outreach & impact campaigns
Course overview
Documentaries and XR non-fiction projects hold immense power to shift public consciousness, legislative frameworks, and cultural norms, yet compelling craft alone rarely guarantees social change. While traditional distribution often treats audience engagement as an afterthought, present creative practice demands that accountability, community participation, and campaign architecture begin in early development.
Bridging the gap between cinematic storytelling, cross-platform media, and social transformation and grounded in ethical frameworks led by on -screen communities, this course teaches you how to build impact campaigns from the inside out: first, by establishing an ethical relationship of care and collaboration with the protagonists and crew, and then by engaging local communities, institutions, and global audiences.
This online course is for emerging to mid-career filmmakers, impact producers, XR creators, non-profit media strategists, and cross-platform storytellers.
Delivered over 6 weeks (3hrs 18:00-21:00 on a Tuesday evening) participants develop a complete, actionable impact strategy tailored to their own documentary or immersive media project.
Week 1: Foundations of impact production & ecosystem mapping
- Deconstructing the structural shift from conventional marketing and PR to strategic impact distribution
- Identifying core domains of change: political, cultural, behavioural, and structural
- Evaluating the project ecosystem during early development and establishing non-extractive creative goals
Week 2: Audience architecture & community-led storytelling
- Moving beyond generalised viewership to map distinct tiers of influence: base communities, swing demographics, institutional decision-makers, and cultural gatekeepers
- Exploring participatory practices that shift narrative agency to communities with lived experience
- Establishing clear, community-informed mission statements for the campaign
Week 3: Ethics, duty of care & field research
- Applying Documentary Accountability Working Group (DAWG) frameworks across development and post-release
- Conducting ethical pre-campaign research through focus groups, participant co-creation, and community dialogue
- Designing participant-first safety protocols and contextualised calls to action (CTAs)
Week 4: Coalition building & strategic cross-sector partnerships
- Identifying strategic alignments across civil society, NGOs, grassroots organisers, foundations, and public institutions
- Developing partner-facing pitches, shared-value agreements, and non-traditional distribution pathways
- Balancing creative independence with partner campaign priorities.
Week 5: Impact measurement, evaluation & data-driven success
- Defining qualitative and quantitative Key Performance Indicators tailored to real-world outcomes
- Developing ongoing monitoring systems to measure legislative movement, educational adoption, and shifts in public discourse
- Managing post-release logistical and legal considerations in advocacy spaces
Week 6: Pitch Lab: cross-platform campaigns
- Integrating immersive, interactive, and spatial media strategies to extend campaign longevity
- Synthesising research, ethics, partnerships, and evaluation into a cohesive, fully articulated campaign proposal
- Pitching the final campaign strategy to an invited industry panel of impact producers, commissioning editors, and foundation strategists
