COURSE OVERVIEW
Designing worlds. Integrating technology. Shaping the future of screen production.
Our MA in Virtual Production offers intensive, hands-on training in real-time filmmaking for film, television and immersive media. You’ll explore end-to-end VP workflows, from virtual scouting and LED volumes to motion capture and AI-enabled tools. You’ll work from a dedicated studio whilst collaborating with other students, such as cinematography, production design and VFX.
What Our Students Create
Content Tabs
The NFTS is one of the world’s leading film schools – a creative community where filmmakers, designers, and technologists work side by side to explore new approaches to storytelling. This course offers a focused opportunity to develop advanced skills in the tools and workflows that are increasingly shaping contemporary film, television, and immersive media production.
Virtual Production (VP) brings together live-action filmmaking, visual effects, games technology, and real-time rendering to support hybrid production methods in which physical and digital elements are developed and integrated alongside one another. On this course, you will explore the full breadth of VP practice - from virtual scouting and green-screen workflows to LED volume cinematography, motion capture, and the considered use of AI-enabled tools. Throughout, VP is treated not as a replacement for established practice, but as a means of supporting creative decision-making, improving planning, and solving practical production challenges.
Students benefit from access to the NFTS’s dedicated Virtual Production studio, where teaching and projects take place in a professional environment designed specifically for real-time and hybrid workflows. You will work hands-on with VP systems while developing an understanding of how these technologies integrate with cinematography, production design, and visual effects pipelines.
Collaboration is central to the course. You will work with other NFTS students, learning how virtual and physical craft come together on set and how shared workflows support communication across departments.
Specialist workshops, Masterclasses, and the year-long Master’s Portfolio encourage reflection on practice, research, and professional development. Teaching is led by experienced industry practitioners, and the course is closely connected to the NFTS’s partnership with the CoSTAR National Lab, providing insight into ongoing research in real-time imaging, volumetric capture, and emerging production workflows.
Graduates go on to roles such as Virtual Production Supervisor or Assistant, Virtual Art Department Artist, Real-Time Artist, LED Stage Operator, Technical Director, Capture Specialist, Previs or Techvis Artist, and creative technologist roles across XR and immersive media.
COURSE FACILITIES
In our dedicated studios you will have your own desk with a dual monitor setup, powered by Alienware Aurora development workstations, built around the latest AMD Ryzen and Nvidia RTX technology. All workstations are kitted out with Industry-standard software such as Unity, Unreal Engine, GitHub, Adobe Creative Cloud, Reality Capture, Maya and ZBrush.
The NFTS has its own VP LED wall, housed on one of the School’s stages.
Virtual Production skills are in high demand across the UK and international screen industries. NFTS graduates work across feature films, episodic drama, commercials, immersive media and live events, progressing into specialist and leadership roles.
This course is designed to support your transition into industry with clarity and confidence. You will graduate with a strong portfolio of practical work, experience operating in professional VP environments, and a clear understanding of how real-time workflows reshape collaboration, authorship and decision-making on set.
You’ll leave the course with a strong, practical understanding of Virtual Production and its applications across a range of sectors. In addition to roles such as VP Supervisor, LED Stage Operator, Virtual Art Department Lead, or Technical Artist, the skills developed are increasingly relevant in fields including architecture, healthcare simulation, education, and cultural heritage.
The course will cover:
Module 1: Fundamentals of Virtual Production
This introductory module establishes a shared conceptual and practical foundation for Virtual Production. You explore VP as a production mindset, learning how real-time engines, hybrid workflows, tracking and digital environments reshape filmmaking across pre-production, production and post.
Module 2: Virtual Art Department
Focusing on the creative and organisational heart of VP pipelines, this module develops your ability to design, build and manage real-time environments. You work with industry-standard content creation tools and game engines, learning asset optimisation, virtual scouting, version control and workflow design.
Module 3: On-Set Virtual Production and Cinematography
This module brings you into the VP studio environment. You learn to configure and operate LED volumes, camera tracking systems and lighting setups, understanding how real and virtual elements combine to create final-pixel imagery. Working in teams, you plan and execute a short on-set VP shoot, developing confidence in colour management, exposure, troubleshooting and professional studio practice.
Module 4: Capture Technologies in Virtual Production
You explore how physical performances, objects and environments are captured and integrated into real-time pipelines. Through hands-on work with motion capture, photogrammetry and scanning, you learn to clean, optimise and deploy captured data within a game engine.
Module 5: AI Integration in Virtual Production
This module examines artificial intelligence as a creative collaborator and production tool within VP workflows. You experiment with AI-assisted story development, asset generation, animation and sound, while critically evaluating authorship, ethics and workflow impact. The module positions you to engage responsibly with rapidly evolving AI technologies and to integrate them strategically into professional pipelines.
Module 6: Virtual Production Final Project
Working collaboratively, you will design and deliver a short Virtual Production film or make a substantial VP contribution to an existing project. The project forms the centrepiece of your MA Portfolio and demonstrates your readiness for industry or further research.
Module 7: MA Portfolio
Running alongside the programme for the complete year, the MA Portfolio supports independent, practice-related research from an academic perspective. You undertake an original project relevant to virtual production. The Portfolio is completed as a document, blog, or other agreed format. It strengthens research, analytical and critical reflection skills.
This one-year, full-time course is intensive, collaborative, and carefully grounded in professional practice. It is designed for filmmakers, designers, and creative technologists who want to deepen their expertise, work across disciplines, and contribute thoughtfully to the evolving landscape of real-time production.
Applicants may come from filmmaking, VFX, animation, games, cinematography, design or related technical backgrounds. What matters most is curiosity, collaboration, and readiness to engage with both creative and technical challenges at postgraduate level.
While many applicants will have a degree from a British or overseas university, we will consider applicants who do not have a degree if they have an impressive portfolio, a creative track record or an alternative qualification.
